In lieu of any details on the forever-stalled Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, Nintendo shared a new trailer for a prequel to the Nintendo Switch masterpiece called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (available November 20th, 2020).

The game will take place 100 years before the start of the original Breath of the Wild and let you play as Link, Zelda, and the four champions (Mipha, Revali, Urbosa, and Daruk) as you try to save Hyrule from Calamity Ganon.

The key word being try.

Because Breath of the Wild is set at a time when Hyrule is overrun by evil creatures that Link and his friends failed to get rid of 100 years ago.

The whole point of BOTW is to restore Hyrule to something of its former glory by battling Ganon's minions, lifting the curses Ganon's forces set on the Divine Beasts, and unsealing Zelda to help you defeat Ganon.

So going back 100 years to the days when the four champions died in battle and Zelda had to put Link in a coma so Ganon wouldn't kill him is a weird choice.

Not because the gameplay won't be good—like the original Hyrule Warriors, this one will have a similar hack and slash combat and exploration style—but because the ending will be anti-climactic as hell.

Unless they deviate wildly from the plot, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will end with Link watching his friends die, failing to protect Hyrule from Ganon, then going into a coma.

So instead of beating the game, you'll just finish it and go to sleep, waiting again for BOTW 2.

Pulling this off will at best let us finish the game as Zelda rescuing Link, and at worst end mid battle with a super disappointing cut scene.

Maybe a more appropriate title would be Hyrule Warriors: Blue Balls Edition.
